If you rescued your pup, they have had a rough start and likely been through some type of trauma. Either way, your dog needs time to decompress, adjust and learn about their new home. Start out by limiting them to one small room, and gradually introduce them to the different spaces in your home. Avoid walks as much as possible and try to only take them out only for potty breaks or a quick sniff in a quiet outdoor area. Limit introductions to new people and other dogs. You may be super excited to show off your new pup, but it’s important to keep them a little sheltered for now to build their confidence.

4. Build your Relationship: Developing a strong bond with your puppy is key. Understand that they don’t know how to live in the human world so be patient and not punishing. Try to notice when your dog is behaving well and reward them for it with praise, attention or a piece of food.  Focusing on what they get right will encourage them to repeat that behavior in the future and is more powerful than just telling them what not to do. Play games to teach your pup to enjoy spending time with you and that you are their most valuable resource
