Embarking on the journey of puppy parenthood can be both exciting and challenging. The joy of bringing a new furry family member home comes with the responsibility of guiding them through their initial days. In this blog, certified pro dog trainer Liz delves into the top tips and strategies for new pup parents, equipping you with the knowledge to not only survive but thrive in the first month with your adorable puppy.
1. Preparation is Key: Before your puppy arrives, puppy-proof your home by removing hazards and anything you don’t want your puppy to be able to pick up in their mouth. Set up a playpen, crate and/or gated safe space for your dog with essentials like a bed, water bowl and chew toys.
2. Establish a Flexible Routine: Consistency helps your puppy feel secure in their new environment, but a rigid routine can lead to behavior struggles down the road. Set a general schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, playtime and naps, but try to keep the routine flexible so that your pup doesn't come to predict what specific activity comes next..
3. Avoid Overwhelm: Although you are probably already in love with your puppy, keep in mind that they have just had a big disruption in their life. If your pup came from a breeder, they’ve just left their mom, siblings and the only home they’ve known. If you rescued your pup, they have had a rough start and likely been through some type of trauma. Either way, your dog needs time to decompress, adjust and learn about their new home. Start out by limiting them to one small room, and gradually introduce them to the different spaces in your home. Avoid walks as much as possible and try to only take them out only for potty breaks or a quick sniff in a quiet outdoor area. Limit introductions to new people and other dogs. You may be super excited to show off your new pup, but it’s important to keep them a little sheltered for now to build their confidence.
4. Build your Relationship: Developing a strong bond with your puppy is key. Understand that they don’t know how to live in the human world so be patient and not punishing. Try to notice when your dog is behaving well and reward them for it with praise, attention or a piece of food. Focusing on what they get right will encourage them to repeat that behavior in the future and is more powerful than just telling them what not to do. Play games to teach your pup to enjoy spending time with you and that you are their most valuable resource
5. Establish Foundation Manners: It’s never too early to learn some manners! Foundation manners teach impulse control and calmness which are vital concepts to teach your pup so they can become a hospitable hound!
As you navigate the early days with your precious pup, remember that patience and preparation are the keys to success. Liz from Hospitable Hounds encourages you to puppy-proof your home, establish routines, and create a safe haven for your newest family member. By avoiding overwhelm, gradually introducing your puppy to their surroundings, and building a strong bond through positive reinforcement, you pave the way for a harmonious relationship. The foundation manners emphasized by Liz will transform your puppy into a hospitable hound, ensuring a lifetime of joy and companionship. Embrace the journey with enthusiasm, armed with these essential Puppy Basics training tips.
